The practice of safe sex remains a widely known issue all over the world. It has even become a phenomenon especially when it has threatened the conservatism of the Catholic Church. The biggest condom producer, Durex, made a so-called global sex survey in 2002 where France grabbed the number one spot for being the country to have the most number of sexual intercourse each year.
In a section of the world where condoms are handed free in cafes and there are installed condom machines everywhere, this is not such a surprise. Durex, being a producer of this iconic brand of preservatifs hits it straight with one of their ad campaigns that was shown in commercials for MTV. It did not emphasize protection from sex but rather the meaning of the brand which is a French verb that means to last. The French people are known for being the most romantic of all the people in the world regardless of their reputation of being such snobs too, especially to the average tourist. But when sex is the topic of conversations, they make up to the downside of their repute by amplifying the talk.
While there are still lots of people out there who risk of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies, the French stays above this group. Another note taken from the said survey, there’s just about 22 percent of French people who said that they do not practice safe sex. It also was stated there that majority of them believes that the problem of AIDS or HIV is a serious adversity to face.
The promotion of safe sex is greatly practiced in France. There are frequent rallies with activists shouting about their support and run for the said matter, information dissemination with brochures or pamphlets given out and tiny pins made of ribbons to be worn by everyone who chooses to support as well. The media is their potent tool too in their utmost level of making people aware about the importance of having safe sex.
To talk about sex would automatically lead to talk about protection and preservatifs as well, but still a lot perceives that there is still so much that needs to be done. Hence, like Durex, if every preservatifs producer would create a subliminal perception that sex becomes a better experience when there is protection, then it would definitely encourage more people to practice safe sex.
To protect and be protected – that is what’s important.
